1. Check eligibility
- 16 years (with guardian's consent) for a motorcycle without gear up to 50 cc.
- 18 years for motorcycles with gear and for light motor vehicles such as cars.
- Commercial/transport vehicles have additional age and education conditions.
2. Gather documents
Commonly required: proof of age, proof of address, passport-size photographs, signature, and a self-declaration of physical fitness (some applicants need a medical certificate). Aadhaar is accepted for many services. Your state portal lists the exact documents.
3. Apply and pay the fee
Most applications start online on the official Parivahan / Sarathi portal. Fill in the form, upload documents and pay the fee. Always use the official website and be careful of agents who ask for extra money.
4. Book a slot and take the test
The learner licence test is usually a short computer-based test on road signs and traffic rules, with a time limit for each question. In many places you can also take it online from home. Practise on RTO Quiz to get used to the format.
5. After you pass
- The learner licence is valid for 6 months.
- While learning, display the "L" sign on your vehicle and drive with a person who already holds a valid licence for that class of vehicle.
- You can apply for the permanent driving licence after 30 days and before your learner licence expires.
Tips to pass
- Learn the shapes and colours of road signs.
- Read your state's driver's handbook.
- Take several practice tests until you score above the pass mark consistently.
